Employing Skills

I have many skills. One of them is that I have the ability to work well in teams, especially with people different from myself. I show this skill well in the beginning of the school year when Ms. Rami had us in groups and told us to build a marshmallow Eiffel tower. I believe our group worked best because we had great communication skills and we got through the process easily and swiftly. Working well with others will help me in my future because if I can’t work well with my staff or if we don’t communicate well we could end up taking someone’s life. So I know this would be a good skill to have.

Another skill I have is an understanding of science and technology and how those subjects are used in real-world settings. Out of all my skills I believe this is a need to have necessity if I’m going to be a Plastic Surgeon. This skill will help me when I have a patient under the knife or if I’m trying to help the patient understand what she/he wants in there operation.

Also another skill I have is an ability to write and speak well. This ability is shown really well when I write a paper on a subject I’m very interested in. When I get into a really interest my mind just expand with all these facts, opinions and workable solutions that will support my idea or frame of mind. This skill will help me in my future by persuading the patient of person I’m the best doctor for there procedure or in my everyday life.

As I said I have many skills but one skill I would like to gain is the ability to understand numbers and statistics. I think that is a good skill to know in the future for the line of work I will be applying to. This skill will help me grow and prosper as a person and a doctor one day. So I do hope to gain this skill.

Teen suicide (Essay)

Teen Suicide

In class when we were reading Romeo and Juliet and we got to their tragic end I knew that I would be interested in investigating the topic of teen suicide. I really got interested in the topic because I wanted to see what led a person to suicide? I wanted to see what where the common causes? Or the warning signs? I’ve seen stories on the news about people who have but I never knew why. No one has ever gotten to the soul point of why some people commit suicide. So that’s why I feel obligated to as a Health Science student, where lives really do matter. Romeo and Juliet’s situation is very common. Some teens believe that because someone you love has been taken away or has left that there’s only thing you can do is commit suicide. Many teens have tried this and sad to say many teens have succeeded in their attempts. Just like Romeo and Juliet.
Teen suicide is a very dire problem. Teen suicide is so common that it’s the third leading cause of death to people form the ages of 15-24. Also 75 percent of the people who commit suicide are depressed. According to National Institute of Mental Health, those as many as 25 suicides are attempted for each one that is completed. That means that for every teen suicide that you hear of, there are probably at least 25 suicide attempts made. In 2007 suicide was the tenth leading cause of death in the U.S. accounting for 34,598 deaths. The overall rate was 11.3 suicide deaths per 100,000 people. According to a survey by the Centers for Disease Control 10,904 high school students in grades 9-12. Juliet wasn’t 15 so technically she didn’t fit didn’t fit into these stats but that doesn’t mean that her death was any less important. The audience in my class believed that the suicide wasn’t such a brilliant choice for Juliet. They thought it could have been avoided like many suicides.
Most common causes of teen suicides: anxiety, sadness, despair, and untreated depression. Untreated mental illness such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and others is the cause for the vast majority of suicides. These can be brought on by the loss of a loved one, rejection by peers or family, and disappointment. Those with serious mental illnesses, however, often experience much more extreme reactions, reactions that can leave them mired in hopelessness. And when all hope is lost, some feel that suicide is the only solution however, they can get help and live the rest of their life. You can see with Romeo and Juliet common causes very clearly. See with Juliet she was very depressed and because Romeo had been banished. Even though everyone thought she was acting depressed because her cousin died. And with Romeo, he was very clingy and wanted to stay. His common warning signs weren’t as dramatic till the end and Juliet’s warning signs were semi dramatic and then they escalated through the play. She even says “My dismal scene I needs must act alone. Come, vial. (Holds out the vial)What if this mixture does not work at all? Shall I be married then tomorrow morning? No, no. This shall forbid it. Lay thou there. (Lays her knife down). Where she states if the potion doesn’t work I will stab myself than marry Paris and live without Romeo.¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬
Studies show that four out of five teens that attempt suicide has been shown very clear warning signs. Some warning signs are as very subtle as Complains more frequently of boredom, Does not respond as before to praise, Loss of interest in schoolwork, Hard time concentrating and paying attention, Problems at work and losing interest in a job, Sleep changes and Changes in eating habits. Or it can be as blunt as Disinterest in favorite extracurricular activities, Substance abuse, Behavioral problems, Withdrawing from family and friends, Neglects hygiene and other matters of personal appearance, Emotional distress brings on physical complaints, Declining grades in school, and Risk taking behaviors . But suicide behavior is complex. Some risk factors vary with age, gender, or ethnic group and may occur in combination or change over time.
Say Romeo and Juliet were both saved seconds before attempting and the family let there love flourish. That wouldn’t help the situation at all. The mental state of these teens would be compared to a fried egg. Both these teens may have started hurting themselves and abusing medical substances. And since there a couple they would have kept these things to themselves. There family would have thought they were okay if the put on an act that they where. Also if they decided to attempt again the family might not see any common warning sign because the teen might try to be more secretive.
If you think your friend might attempt suicide you can help by asking if the person is thinking about suicide, listen openly and without judging, believe what a person says, and take all threats seriously, never keep someone’s suicidal feelings a secret, share responsibility by getting others involved, reassure the person that help is available, and support and encourage him/her to reach out to sources of help in the community, act immediately if you feel someone is at imminent risk for suicide by involving others who can help… and if necessary make contact with the police, emergency services, or a hospital to ensure the person’s safety. In the play the family could have been a little more supportive of there love. They should have been more in touch with there child instead of the nurse. If they were they would have knew she loved Romeo and then he wouldn’t have been banished and they could still love each other forever. And they wouldn’t have committed suicide.

Biography (Nikki Giovanni)

by   |  send email to author

3.4.10

Sadly I have never heard of Nikki Giovanni before. B after writing and reading about her life story I can say now she could be a very good role model to any girl or boy. She talks about life up and down which a person like me who has been through many ups and down -and will face more in the future- can really appreciate what she is saying. It’s amazing how much I can learn from a person I stumbled upon and pick randomly. I think girls in the 21 century should maybe pick a role model more like Nikki Giovanni than a modern woman such as Nikki Minaj.
Nikki’s Childhood was very chaotic. Not due to her parents or friends or important people in her life such as role models. They were all very nurturing but what made it chaotic was the white supremacist. That was the time that they expressed there thought everyone who was anti-white views were lynched or severely prosecuted. But it didn’t matter to Nikki; her thoughts were plainly “rather be with the thugs than the people who are complaining about them.”. Nikki’s pride and a deep concern for the lives of women came from her grandmother. The intellectual and emotional heirlooms where passed on to Giovanni. Those traits became consistent features in her poetry. Giovanni’s social and political views were generally conservative. These views underwent massive transformation during Giovanni’s studies at Fisk University where Giovanni not only accepted the racism she encountered in some of her classmates, but that did not stop her it only inspired her to do more. She was the type of girl who wouldn’t stand for this type of behavior so she started the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee on campus.

Her Education at the beginning was as of any normal middle class person but as she achieved she grew to greater and greater things. In 1960 she began her studies at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. Her grandfather’s alma-mater. She graduated in 1967 with honors, receiving a B.A. in history, and if that wasn’t enough she went on to attend the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University. In 1969 Giovanni began teaching at Livingston College of Rutgers University, and since 1987, she has taught writing and literature at Virginia Tech, where she is a University Distinguished Professor.

As you might be able to tell her career was Just like her childhood. It started out okay and then she worked to make it great. She is an author, poet, speaker and an activist. She is one of the worlds moat read poets. Her righting speaks from her mind and her soul. I see her as the type of person to say what’s on her mind not to make people feel better but to make sure they know the truth. That what truly what inspire me to pick her but really must have inspired so many people to stand up from there selves so they don’t have to live in fear. She has written over two dozen books, which include children poems and written essays. She also wrote a poem book in memory to Tupac Shakur. In the book she has a poem “All eyes on you” in dedication to one of his albums “All Eyes On Me”. She has a CD of her poetry. It was a contender for the Grammy Award in the spoken word category in 2003. Nikki had many famous poems such as habits (below)
Habits

I haven’t written a poem in so long
I may have forgotten how
Unless writing a poem
Is like riding a bike
Or swimming upstream
Or loving you
It may be a habit that once acquired
Is never lost
But you say I’m foolish
Of course you love me
But being loved of course
Is not the same as being loved because
Or being loved despite
Or being loved
If you love me why
Do I feel so lonely
And why do I always wake up alone
And why am I practicing
Not having you to love
I never loved you that way

Thorough out her career her views only life has only gotten stronger and more meaningful as she has matured. I guess you can say her mind soul and body all developed together. She has very memorable things to say about what’s happening about life around her. She said many inspiring things such as “what’s the difference between dragging a black man behind a truck in Jasper, Texas, and beating a white boy to death in Wyoming because he’s gay?” Its amazing how one person can emphasize on such a serious topic with such little words. It blows my mine how this one woman looks at the major problem and just bluntly speaks her minds as if she was talking about the weather. She faces them head on and many people rather not even talk about the subject that she is so keen on speaking about.

The most important award Nikki got just might not be an award at all. But to me a great achievement she made was fighting cancer. It takes strong women to fight it but stronger women to learn and grow from the challenges in your life. That’s what Nikki is she is a very, very strong woman. Even though she would very much disagree with me since she said: If it takes a near-death experience for you to appreciate your life, you’re wasting somebody’s time.”

Her contribution to society was just solely as an American poet, writer, commentator, activist, and educator. Her focus is on the individual and the power one has to make a difference in oneself and in the lives of others. Giovanni’s poetry expresses strong racial pride, respect for family, and her own experiences as a daughter, a civil rights activist, and a mother.

Nikki is very healthy and alive. She has been very close to death but she steeped away is very fine and happy now. She was diagnosed with lung cancer. She had surgery at Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio and eventually had a lung removed. Giovanni gave up smoking after she was diagnosed, saying in 1996 that she now smokes in her dreams which most people can’t do. Just as she said before “We know we did nothing to deserve it. But neither does a child in Africa dying of AIDS. Neither do the invisible children walking the night awake to avoid being captured by a rogue army. Neither does the baby elephant watching his community being devastated for ivory. Neither does the Mexican child looking for fresh water…We are Virginia Tech…We will prevail.” She followed her own words and fought her sickness. She didn’t do anything to deserve and she didn’t ask for it but she got it and in the end she won her battle and prevailed on.

ABC Poem “C”

by   |  send email to author

The letter c
Looks like a “u”
And a “n” sometimes
Looks like a cup
Or even a bowl!
Can look like a snake shaped as a “C”
Looks like over the ear headphones
Or a the mouth of a smiley face
But mostly looks like a “C” on its side. :)

The Lady or The Tiger Lap5 1.31.11

by   |  send email to author

The method of the kings justice is unfair and very barbaric to me and im not saying that in a good way. He allows the person who commited a terrible act or a person who is wongfully accused to choose there punishment or reward strictly on luck. I dont think that is fare at all and im happpy that our justice system isn’t liek that now. Imagine you wrongfully accused of a crime you didnt commit and you can only choose between getting maulled to pieces by a tiger, or getting a new wife! It wouldn’t matter if you were happily married because now you have to marry this women!

The princess ahd difficulty picking a door because she didn’t want her lover to be killed. But she also dosen’t want to see them wiith another women that you believe is more beautiful than you.

Women might have commmited crimes but i believe it didnt happen alot. But of they were to commmit a crime the might have just been killed on the spot or maybe they would take there husband or child (boy). To be tried for them.

If i was a princess and was put in that situation i would have let my lover choose the door with the women insie it beacuse even though i couldn’t be happy woth him someone else woul be able to. And i don’t think i could see my lover die in front of my eyes.

If was the lover i would have choosen the door with the women because i don’t think dying for someone i didn’t have very big feelings for i really important. And anyway i could marry the girl then divorce her and run back to the princess.

In my ending if the story the lover open the door to where the princess is and then i woul be very ramatic and push the women away and announce that the only women i want to be with is the princess. Or thats what i would like my lover to do and then i tell the king that going thorough the door and findig the women proved her wasn’t wrong for loving the princess so i (lover) should be able to take her and in marriage.

No i dont believe that his look upon justice was the right kind but im sure that it was ammusing to the people of that time.
